Course Description:

Eighth grade math is designed for students to use various mathematical processes in order to solve mathematical problems in the classroom and in real-life situations. In this course, students will solve problems dealing with the number system, functions, expressions, equations, and inequalities, geometry and measurement, and data analysis, statistics, and probability. 


General Objectives:

1.   Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them

2.   Reason both contextually and abstractly

3.   Use critical thinking skills to justify mathematical reasoning and critique the reasoning of others

4.   Connect mathematically ideas and real-world situations through modeling

5.   Use a variety of mathematical tools effectively and strategically

6.   Communicate mathematically and approach mathematical situations with precision

7.   Identify and utilize structure and patterns

Success in the classroom is greatly affected by the conduct of those in the classroom.  The following school wide classroom rules have been developed to help our students be successful.

In addition, all students should follow all district guidelines as specified in the student handbook.

Grading Scale







Graded assignments include:



Homework-combined for one grade each nine weeks


Most days

10-30 minute assignments

Study for quizzes and tests


90 – 100     A


80 – 89       B


70 – 79      C


60– 69       D


 0  – 59        F

Tests are 30% of the grade. Quizzes and homework are 70% of the grade.

2nd Quarter

  1. The Real Number System
  2. Pythagorean Theorem
  3. Translations, Reflections, and Rotations
  4. Congruency of Triangles
  5. Similarity





4th Quarter

  1. Lines of Best Fit
  2. Non-Linear Data
  3. Bivariate Data/Scatter Plots
  4. Matrix
  5. Review all standards for state testing
